MSK US and Regenerative Medicine for the Knee

Diagnosis and Management Controversies in the Postoperative Shoulder

Ultrasound + EMG Integration

An Ultrasound Approach to Nerves (Upper Limb)

MSK US and Regenerative Medicine for the Knee

DATE

January 30 -February 1, 2020

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

18 million Americans are currently living with symptomatic knee OA.  500,000 knee arthroplasties and knee HTOs and 650,000 arthrospcopic procedures for degenerative knees are performed every year in the United States. The literature tells us that arthroscopic debridement of OA and meniscal degeneration of the knees does not improve outcome or function. This creates a vacuum for patients with symptomatic OA/meniscal degeneration of the knees for care when they have maximized conservative measures such as physical therapy, activity modification and corticosteroid/visco elastic supplementation.

This course will examine how to meet the needs of this population through diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound with an emphasis on regenerative medicine. We will emphasize appropriate patient selection, outcome measurements and post regenerative medicine rehabilitation protocols.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Increase the participant’s knowledge to better perform and interpret musculoskeletal ultrasound exams
  • Interpret complex musculoskeletal ultrasound images and list treatment option and patient management strategies
  • Outline the biology and evidence for use of various regenerative substances
  • Describe when, why and how to integrate regenerative medicine as a practical treatment option
  • Prepare regenerative substances for perform ultrasound guided injections
  • Demonstrate the principals of injection techniques for the performance of knee pathologies with musculoskeletal interventions on cadaver models
  • List the role of ultrasound in the evaluation of the knee
  • State the role of ultrasound in nerve entrapment syndromes
  • Increase confidence to incorporate protocols, advanced scan techniques and regenerative medicine applications to improve diagnostic and treatment modalities

A WORD FROM OUR COURSE CHAIRMEN

“Evaluation and management of the postoperative shoulder can be a very challenging problem for the musculoskeletal physician and is compounded by difficulties with imaging the shoulder following surgery. Diagnostic ultrasound has been demonstrated as an effective and efficient modality for the evaluation and management of all shoulder disorders and has been extremely beneficial in the postoperative setting.  This course unites the disciplines of Orthopedic Surgery and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation to maximize the evaluation and management of the postoperative shoulder patient with an emphasis on the utilization of diagnostic ultrasound. The course will center on disorders affecting of Shoulder Motion, Strength, Stability and Smoothness and includes both didactic lectures as well as hands on ultrasonography of post-surgical shoulder patients.  Following this course, all musculoskeletal physicians should have a comprehensive understanding of current Orthopedic Shoulder procedures, their most common and challenging postoperative complications and should be confident with the ultrasonographic evaluation of these conditions.”  Dean Ziegler, MD

“Management of problems in the postoperative shoulder patient presents unique diagnostic and treatment challenges for both surgical and nonsurgical providers.  Often times these problems tend to fall into four patterns of deficiency identified as problems with strength, motion, smoothness and stability.  We have organized our conference around exploring and illuminating an approach to each of these areas of concern from the surgical and nonsurgical perspectives. Because ultrasound plays a key role in assisting with diagnosis and management of these conditions, this imaging modality plays a key role in this exploration.”  Nelson Hager, MD

Ultrasound + EMG Integration

Ultrasound + EMG Integration: The Anatomical and Electrophysiological Diagnosis

DATE

April 4-7, 2019

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Clinicians that perform electrophysiologic testing are on a quest to localize the functional loss and provide an objective data set for an appropriate clinical diagnosis and ultimate treatment. To completely evaluate the pathology of the nerve, structural images are necessary and should be obtained via a quick and cost-effective modality.  Although MRI is available, it does not provide information on vascular flow or dynamic abnormalities that are often needed for a full neuromusculoskeletal examination. Concomitantly, it can be cost prohibitive and rarely can it be done in concert with electrophysiologic testing.  Ultrasound provides the answer and is more practical for routine screening of common nerve abnormalities both from a cost containment perspective as well as convenience for both the clinician and, most important, the patient.

ExEd provides the educational platform to not only teach clinicians the basics of electrophysiologic testing, sonographic assessment of nerves but most importantly how they become integrated for optimal patient care and outcomes.  The ExEd curriculum is designed for both the novice and proficient electromyographer/sonographer.

Based upon Cadwell’s audience, the curriculum will encompass basics of the electrophysiologic and sonographic evaluations of nerves. The course will begin with anatomy and physiology of nerves, move toward electrophysiologic testing, sonographic assessment of nerves and ultimately, the integration of the two technologies.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Review anatomy and physiology of nerves
  • Perform electrophysiologic testing and machine optimization
  • Assess common entrapment neuropathies with integration of US and EMG/NCS
  • Enhance patient experience with clinical and financial benefits of neuromusculoskeletal outcomes
  • Review case studies

An Ultrasound Approach To Nerves (Upper Limb)

AN ULTRASOUND APPROACH TO NERVES: Optimizing Diagnosis and Treatment of Entrapment Neuropathies for the Upper Limb

DATE

March 13-15, 2019

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Given the ever-changing healthcare environment, neurologists, physiatrists and sports medicine physicians need an opportunity to optimize their skill sets in reference to the diagnosis and management of nerve injuries and diseases. This course is designed as a review of ultrasound techniques for diagnosis and treatment with regard to the patient with peripheral nerve dysfunction. For those that want to enhance their electromyographic practice, attention will be placed on integrating both sonographic and electrophysiologic technologies for optimal patient outcomes.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Learn how to identify normal peripheral nerves with high frequency ultrasound.
  • Learn how to identify sonographic abnormalities in peripheral nerves in pathological conditions.
  • Learn to use ultrasound to identify nerves for guided procedures, injections and blocks
  • Gain a better understanding of peripheral nerve structures
  • Learn to use ultrasound to assess peripheral nerves during electrodiagnostic testing.
  • Learn to identify nerves as part of the musculoskeletal exam
  • Learn to identify nerves in normal and pathological conditions as an adjunct to electrodiagnostic testing
  • Improve acumen and skills using ultrasound for peripheral nerve procedures and blocks
